Debates
5th & 6th Class pupils have been locked in battle, debating some topical issues that affect their everyday lives. So far, we have debated ‘Weekends should be 3 days long’ and ‘Children should choose their own bedtime’. Captains, with their team of speaker 2 and 3, have worked tirelessly in their preparations and have delivered some very impressive and convincing speeches. So far, there has been very little to choose between the Proposing and Opposing teams and pupils are consistently improving and fine tuning their debating skills. With topics like ‘School uniforms should be banned’ and ‘Homework is unnecessary’ yet to be debated, it should make for an interesting final month in 5th & 6th Class!
Girls 5-a-Side
Congratulations to our girls soccer team who qualified for the county finals by topping their group with three wins out of three. The girls returned to Bailieborough this week in a bid to become county champions for the first time. Unfortunately, after some very impressive performances, they missed out on qualifying for the final on goal difference. Well done girls and a special thank you to our mascot on the day!
Boys 5-a-Side
Well done to our boys soccer team who played valiantly in their three group games of this years FAI 5-a-side competition in Bailieborough. Although we came up a little short, the boys should be very proud of their performances and, more importantly, the sportsmanship they showed on the day.
Stars in our Eyes
What a special day it was for our class with the visit of Cavan County star Paddy Lynch. Paddy had heard of the array of footballing talent we had in our ranks and wanted to meet our class, Darragh in particular, who was chosen to play at half time in an Ulster Championship game. Paddy did a short training session, took time to give autographs and had a special gift for Darragh, the jersey he wore against Kerry in last year’s championship! A huge thank you to Paddy for taking time from your studies to make it a day our class won’t forget.
Steps Challenge
Congratulations to Eoghan who won our Lenten Steps Challenge with a very impressive tally of over 700k steps! Not far behind was Odie and Lucille. Well done to all, you have those Easter eggs well and truly burned off already!
SVP Appreciation
Congratulations to Cúan O’Higgins who received a certificate in recognition of his admirable work in organising a Food Drive in aid of SVP. Well done Cúan, we’re all so proud of you!
Basketball
We had a fantastic few weeks of coaching from Graham Tolan and players from The East Cavan Eagles. We are now ready to hit the ground running with our boys and girls Basketball Leagues after Easter. Thank you to Graham for the very generous donation of a bag of basketballs to the school.
Easter Bake Sale
We hosted an Easter Bake Sale to raise funds four our Cairde playground upgrades. Thank you to everyone who baked and bought, we raised over 700 euro!!
Aspire Project
Pupils in 5th & 6th in Knocktemple NS and Billis NS have been meeting each Friday to take part Drama, Kempo, Badminton, Handball and Rounders lessons. It is an amazing opportunities for pupils from different backgrounds to get to know one another in a friendly and playful environment. A big thank you to the coaches Anne, Michael, Jana, Mr. Mulvey and Fidelma for sharing their talents with our pupils. They have had a lot of fun learning all these new skills together.
Genius Hour Projects
Some examples of our Genius Hour Projects. We have full autonomy on what we work on and how they are presented. We have learned a lot from each other throughout these projects.
Rugby Blitz
6th Class represented the school in a rugby blitz in Kilnaleck. We played against schools from the surrounding area and really enjoyed the day. Thank you to Jon, our coach, for organising the event.
Dáil Visit
We had an amazing experience in Leinster House today. Our guide was excellent and gave a very informative tour of the building and explained what happened in each room….if those walls could talk!! After a few interviews with local press, we took some time on the way home for lunch in the Phoenix Park, unfortunately the President wasn’t available for tea. A huge thank you to Minister Niamh Smyth for organising the day.
Reactions Experiment
We put our reactions to the test with this experiment. Once the ruler dropped, we depended on our reaction speed to catch the ruler between our index finger an thumb. Thankfully we were all quick enough to catch the ruler before it was too late!
Lá Glas/Seachtain na Gaeilge
Bhí an spórt go deo againn inniú le haghaidh Lá Glas. Bhaineamar a lán taitneamh as an “Aglaimh Beirte”. Míle buíochas do Mrs. White Lynch as ucht an damhsa “Mo Dróilín”
Visit to St. Oliver’s PP
Our class was treated to a fantastic day in St. Oliver’s PP. As most of our class will be attending here in the coming years, it was a great chance to get a taste for all the wonderful subjects the school has to offer. Although we will miss Mr. McHugh terribly, we can’t wait to move on to the next step on our educational journey.
